It seems kinda jackass'ish to use your own wallpaper, but I make these things because I like them, so  . Normally I wouldn't even use a wallpaper, but it was getting too boring on that drive.

I have two hard drives I boot from, this is the one I use when I need to render shit constantly and can't be bothered with my mess of icons and those distractions. This is the one I use when I gotta be 'productive' and make sure it won't crash. You'll see my Maya icon in the quicklaunch bar, as well as a shortcut to a cmd window for rendering command line, and of course winamp for passing those long render hours more easily. My other drives desktop is pretty standard, full of icons, folders, random garbage, you know.

The thing rendering is a test of a new shader I had a friend of mine program that allows custom reflectance distribution along with real anisotropy, although the test there wasn't showing off the custom distribution curves. I'll most likely be using this shader pretty soon once the bugs are worked out.

It blows being broke, I did a huge ( 9000x6000 ) render in C4d it came out with a huge blue circle around the lens effect on my light source witch is not good in a space scene, it compleatly killed my picture.

Now my girlfrend is mad at me 'cause "You have been trying to make a picture to sell as a print for two months now and have got nothing done, your coumputer is crap, quit trying 'till you buy a new computer 'cause you are waisting my time."

C4d is super easy to model in but, the render SUX, Bryce ( both of them I found on the HDs of "trashcan computers".) has crappy modeling but a good if not slow render.

I can't afford Maya, Mental Ray, and trying to use Blender is hard as hell [ it has a very steep learning curve ] or I would use them.

LIFE SUX when you are broke :(

Nice wallpaper. :D I'm a junkie for shiny, chrome-y stuff, so this is all good.

I like to use my rendered fractals for desktops here. They're visually interesting to me, which is something good for a wallpaper in my opinion. Sometimes I'll use either a highly complex one that took ages to find a gradient for, or use one of my more minimalist ones. At the least, they're easy enough to develop a color scheme around. :XD:

Holy CRAP, that's amazing! I've used Maya, and maybe it just hates me, but that looks like it'd be complicated to do...the ring wouldn't be AS hard, it's just a torus, but the cube...daaaaaaaaang. *extremely impressed*

Not big enough, if it were my choice Ide be running at 2048 or higher resolution one one of those big widescreen CRT monitors. I'm always running out of screen space!

ok maybe this is a stupid question - so when you "render" something what does that mean? do you start out with a photograph or a blank screen? because if those are drawn from scratch... that's amazing.
Reply
:icondivineerror:
DivineError Featured By Owner Apr 19, 2005
It means you start with a blank 3d space, then you use a bunch of tools in the software to build an object, then you work on some materials for the objects, then you set up lights and cameras and various other options, then you push the render button :)

Why do you need anisotropy if it is untextured?
Reply
:icondivineerror:
DivineError Featured By Owner Apr 19, 2005
What do you mean, why would you need a texture? All it needs is mapping coordinates. "Real" anisotropy is basically a blurred reflection that blurs more in one direction than another, in this case on that torus I had it blurred along the V coordinates.

If you wanted to get ultra technical and ridiculously realistic and even longer rendertimes, you could instead just have a regular (non blurred) reflection then have a bumpmap (or real geometry even) in the shape of a the real tiny tiny surface lines of your object. I've done this before, it's actually kinda fun.

Well the only anisotropy i know of is the one that makes the shallow angled lines in my games sharp :)
