They took away the ability for people to use preview images on anything other than downloadable files (.zips, etc) and gif's. The main idea behind this is that they want to prevent people from uploading 'full view me' type previews that don't look like the art itself, and also people posting images that go against policy, but are hidden behind preview pictures. So in effect, it can be a good thing.

Problem is, they didn't fix DA's terrible resizing of transparent png's first, so now anyone who submits a png with any kind of transparency will get nasty image previews/thumbnails such as the one I linked to above.

Also, I do believe that in some instances, previews should be there for regular images. I tihnk that in some cases it's needed. For exmaple, this deviation www.deviantart.com/deviation/2… , would have lost it's hilarity had someone been able to see the RTFM first before opening it. So perhaps it should just be a subscriber feature, that way it prevents any misusing of the preview ability (since no-ones gonna wanna lose the money they paid for the sub), and ads that small extra ability that makes the sub more.... substantial.
